Best Sequence Settings for Editing & Playback of DSLR Footage?
When shooting video with a DSLR and cutting in FC7, what are the sequence settings you’re using? Historically we use XDCAM for our sequence settings (1080i, 8 bit, 29.97). The reason we use that setting is that we’ve tried all sorts of other sequence settings and we always have playback issues. But we’re convinced our picture quality is not as good as it should be, so we’re trying to find the weak link in the chain and wonder if it’s a mistake for us to use XDCAM for our sequence settings. Any suggestions? Thank you.

XDCAM should only be used for XDCAM footage. It’s a Long GOP format, and any non-GOP format it that will be wonky.
Use a ProRes 422 sequence setting, and convert all your footage to ProRes BEFORE you import it and begin editing. Never bring in the native H.264 files. FCP does not work well with them.

There is only one 422 settings…ProRes 422. There’s also ProRes LT, ProRes HQ…and ProRes Proxy and ProREs 444 if you have FCP 7. Zero is gained in choosing ProRes HQ over ProRes 422 for DSLR footage…other than 50% larger file sizes, so I just use ProREs 422

Your clip settings and sequence settings must match. So if you convert the footage to ProREs 422…use a ProRes 422 sequence. Just make a new sequence, add a clip, and click YES when FCP asks to make the sequence match. Done.
