Hi to all! I have a nice cine-style Varicam with the Canon HJ11x4.7B HD-EC lens, focus follow and so on. Very happy with the set up. Two projects I have coming this summer requires some “run and gun” shots and am looking for the best camera, under $10k, that might provide an acceptable overall picture so I can cut with the Varicam footage. Panasonic is releasing a new P2 HD camera that is supposed to be under $10k or should I look at something else? The P2 cam probably won’t ship till end of summer anyway.

    Many Thanks

The HVX is it- there’s nothing else even close that’s not another Varicam.

Thanks Noah! When do you guess it might be available for purchase by mortals?

    Thanks

Thanks Noah, been reading the info about that cam and when it releases later this year P2 card prices probably will lower in price to reflect acceptance and demand. In the mean time I really need a second camera that will intercut with the Varicam at some acceptable level for short shots. How might the Z1U fit in? My final will be for HD cable broadcast so there might not be a good solution here.

    Thanks

In 720p 24p mode? The Z1U is pretty far off 1080i HDV- pretty much apples and oranges. I’d say rent another Varicaam when you truly need 2 cams.

That new panny camera will certainly fit your bill once it ships. We’re doing a show right now that’s using the DVX-100A shooting in Anamorphic mode and then upconverted to HD and it looks really really good. The nice thing is that the colors on the camera are very close to the Varicam and the images do seem to intercut very nicely with the Varicam footage.

If you own a 1200A player / recorder it will do the upconvert for you via HD-SDI output. I’ve tried this and it looks pretty much identical to some footage we had upconverted via a Terranex.

Thanks Walter, I do have the 1200A deck and I think your solution might be the best. Hopefully P2 cards will get cheaper by the time the cam ships. In the mean time probably the DVX 100A is the best bet.

    Many thanks
