I am a promotions producer for a television station. I have always built my D1/NTSC comps 720×486. When I create still artwork I do use 720×540 and scale to fit once inside the AE comp. However I was just told that it is better to do the entire project, including comps 720×540 square pixels and then render to 720×486. I dont much like the idea of scaling my video 10% but was told that its a wash when rendered back down. Is there any validity to this? Looking for pros and cons.

Now there’s a debate. Many prefer to work in 648×486 square pixels, claiming greater fidelity to the original when dropped into a D1 comp. Others believe that would be enlarging the image, so they prefer to reduce from 540 to D1. Me, I work in D1 using pixel aspect ratio correction, but switch it off when rendering or when checking the TV output from the Decklink card.
(I rarely bring in full-frame stills)

Look for Rick Gerard’s article, Dr. Strangepixel on the COW — hope it helps.

After several hours of reading and study. I feel that creating photos and graphics formats in photoshop at 720 x 540 will be my approach. Working composition size NTSC D1 720×540 square pixels. Render format NTSC D1 720×468- which produces a rectangle pixel for viewing on a television set.

This seems the proper way to go about things.
