best render settings for me?
Posted by James Rudge on May 17, 2011 at 6:56 pmokay i know ive posted a lot today but im having real problems creating a project with multiple file types.
The main problem is with the MTS files that i converted to AVI as these are wavy and im not getting maximum quality out of them. should be full HD)
The clips are:
1280 x 720 at 30 fps shot on a nikon D something?!
640 x 480 at 60 fps on sanyo xacti cg10
1280 x 720 at 30 fps on sanyo xacti cg10
1920 x 1088 at 50 fps on a panasonic hdc-sd10 which is actually a very good quality camcorder but is creating the main problems for me as it very wavey quality with movement. How can i render this so I get best out of all the videos?
Thank you very much for any help
P.S the project is ultimately for youtube but i would like a good quality out of the video.
I use vegas 8 on vista home premium, 32 bit

May 17, 2011 at 7:24 pmI would start by getting rid of anything you converted because the conversion to AVI could be what’s messing you up. Then I would set your project properties to match your render properties and let Vegas take care of the frame rate problems. Make sure you have your Deinterlace Method set to Blend Fields or Interpolate Fields. Also look at the clips media properties in Vegas and make sure that Vegas is interpreting them all correctly.
You are going to get some ghosting because you are mixing 50fps PAL with 60i NTSC footage. Vegas isn’t going to have to create some new frames by blending two existing frames.

May 17, 2011 at 8:35 pmvery helpful john thanks, but a few things in instant reply to this
[John Rofrano] “I would start by getting rid of anything you converted because the conversion to AVI could be what’s messing you up”
yes i think your right there, but the thing is i cant open these mts files in anything and not vegas. I can convert them in avidemux but are there certain settings needed or is there a plug in i can get to make it accept mts files.

What do you mean by this? checking that they are all play correctly in project window, without the wavey effect?

so it cant duplicate or blend the frames because theres the mix of ntsc and pal??
thanks very much john

Where did the MTS files come from? Which of the formats that you listed are they?

Right-click on the event on the timline and select Properties and then select the Media tab. Half way down it will for the video format and properties:

If Vegas doesn’t show the correct properties, this could be part of the problem.[James Rudge] “so it cant duplicate or blend the frames because theres the mix of ntsc and pal??”
Yea, mixing PAL and NTSC is not a good idea.

May 18, 2011 at 12:43 pmthanks again
the mts files are double pal at 1920 x 1088 shot on the panasonic hdc sd10 but i have tried converting them to avi on avidemux
when checking properties of these ones it says ffdshow video codec under the format bit on media tab. These are the converted avi files as i cant do anything with the mts files
so one problem that will be impossible to sidestep is the ghosting due to mix of pal and ntsc but can i deinterlace the converted mts files and bis there a better way i can convert the mts files like rendering them into progresive files?
and ultimately what is the correct render settings for me
cheers

You know, I really can help ya’ here because I’ve never installed ffdshow on any of my editing workstations nor will I ever. I assume you have lots of things installed that are possibly conflicting with each other. I keep a clean editing workstation and avoid things like ffdshow. I know others here use it but I just personally avoid it.
So you’re saying that Vegas will not play the native Panasonic files? I find this odd because it says AVCHD right on the camera. What happens with you drop one of these files on the timeline? (although, with ffdshow installed, you may get different results with Vegas that you should get)

May 18, 2011 at 2:18 pmyes i really do need to have a clean out of software to create a clean editing system. Im just the sort of person who reads a post that says to get software and it rarely works so ive just got a stack of conversion software etc.
i see messages about ffdshow alot but know little of it. And this ffdshow format came about because i converted the mts file to avi with a mjeg preset on avi demux so is that anything to do with it?
and no, frustratingly me vegas 8 freezes when i click on an mts file when trying to import it. I cant drop it on timeline either, the black circle with cross through it just shows implying that vegas doesnt like it. I have only been able to open it with avidemux.
shall i try to remove/uninstal ffdshow? what is it actually for?]
thanks again john, much appreciated

here is a video showing the problem

Nope. When I convert files to M-JPEG with AviDemux, the format in Vegas Pro 10 says: Sony Motion JPEG. This is what I mean about ffdshow messing up your PC. It will take over codec support for codecs that you paid for in Vegas but are not getting because it took over decoding them. This is not good.
[James Rudge] “and no, frustratingly me vegas 8 freezes when i click on an mts file when trying to import it. “
Well… you are using a very OLD version of Vegas with a very NEW camera. That might be your problem right there. I would download the trial of Vegas Pro 10 and if you can open the file with that, then your solution should be to upgrade your version of Vegas to be at least as new as your camera. 😉
[James Rudge] “shall i try to remove/uninstal ffdshow? what is it actually for?]”
You can try uninstalling and and rebooting your PC to see if that helps. FFDshow is a decoding filter. It takes over the decoding of video files that use to be done by Vegas. It’s very helpful if it allows you to decode a format that Vegas doesn’t support. It’s not so helpful if it wrongly decodes something that Vegas does support and would have done a better job at.

Yea, you’ve got some interlace problems with that video. What is your Deinterlace Method set to?
Are you into Parkour and FreeRunning? 😉

May 18, 2011 at 4:01 pmits set to blend fields, does the field order matter? mines on upper field first.
and yes i am very much so!
okay well i’ll try uninstalling ffdshow and installing vegas 10 trial (which i have tried in past but had problems due to vista service pack 2) but yeah i’ll try that again and see if ive got any another coding software interrupting it (i believe i downloaded some k lite codec pack and avisynth thing yesterday in effort to solve problem) then il try again.
is setting the deinterlace method all you need to do to solve the interlace problems?
once this problem is solved the next will be getting right quality to match right youtube file size!! joy!
