  • Best render settings for home videos (DV AVI)

    Hi all,

So I have a lot of miniDV SD recordings that I have transferred via firewire to the computer. I have also just recently used passthrough on the camcorder to convert VHS tapes to digital. Both used DV capture, and both are SD in raw (large) .AVI files. They are 720×480. These are all home movies, and my goal, after editing, is to render with the settings that will retain the best quality. They will be used on a DVR (saved to HDD, not burned to DVD).

I tried one last night, and saved using Sony AVC (.mp4), similar to what I used for HD. I used the Internet 4:3 template (I have to check bitrate, but pretty sure I bumped it up). It was a 100 min video, and transcoded in 47mins. But, I was not happy with the .mp4 output – it looks to have lost too much quality.

While I have a lot of space, I would like to cut down size some (it is about 2.3gb/10mins in .AVI capture). Could someone confirm if Sony AVC (.mp4) is best to use for SD (DV captures) videos while retaining really good quality? Or maybe suggest an alternative? Thanks greatly.

I tried again last night. Compared several methods, but came back to Sony AVC. The original one i did was 2.5mb/s. This time i used the default template, and 6mb/s bitrate, and set project to best. i checked something like use original frame rate. Still not perfect, but a nice mix of file size and quality. One odd thing was the original (DV-AVI) was slightly letterboxed and wider, while the render was no letterbox and a bit thinner. the original video was 640×480, DV captured at 720×480, and the template was 720×480.

Square Pixel. For DV (or any material) should I just leave the default (720×480; ratio ~0.9091) or would it be best to use square pixel (640×480; ratio 1.0). When i switch to square pixel on a test it really boosts the CPU usage and doubles the render time. What does square pixel do to the output? make is more true?
