I would use the Sony AVC render type with one of the HD templates (AVCHD, Blu-ray, or Internet HD).

Thanks guys, I was looking at all those bit rates and thinking I didn’t know how much changing the bit rate would change the quality, plus the only render option that had an = next to it was the “.mov uncompressed” option and I found out the hard way last time that was not really a good option.

Hey I have rendered my project to the highest bitrate (20000000bps I think)as a mp4 but the original footage was about 1.3 gig for 3:50min and now after rendering it’s only 595mb which would suggest image loss. I know this sounds paranoid but the director is going to submit this to film festivals and to be viewed on the big screen.
1920 x 1080 25p Footage taken with canon 7d h.264
The render I have done looks pretty good but I don’t want any loss ideally.

You’ll need to tell us more about exactly what you did because if you used Sony AVC, then 16,000,000 is the highest bit-rate allowed. You could also render to MainConcept MPEG2 with the HDV 1080-60i template which will give you 25,000,000 bit-rate. What was the frame rate of the 7D footage? You want to be sure not to change that in your render. If you shot and edited 24p use the HDV 1080-24p template instead.
