  • Best RAID format for multi-platform system?

Posted by Kristoffer Newsom on April 20, 2008 at 6:23 am

Hey guys, I’m considering a new FCP system with a dual-partitioned system drive (or just two drives) so I can have the flexibility to run multiple editing platforms under multiple OSes… If I wanted to build a RAID that would be functional for FCP but also for Vegas or Premiere Pro under Vista, what would be the ideal format for it?

    Thanks,
    Kris

You can’t. FCP only works with Mac OS formatted arrays. It will not capture to a Windows formatted array.

Actually, there is a solution that I heard about from our esteemed Associate Publisher, Mr. Tim Wilson.

Mediafour, makers of the program MacDrive, have a variant of that app called “CrossStripe,” which allows you to, in theory, create a raid array that can be utilized my both MAC and Windows, allowing you to boot to either and read or write to the raid under both OSs. You can see the app at https://www.mediafour.com/products/crossstripe/.

Tim was testing the app himself I believe and you should go and search on the Apple – Windows on Mac Forum at https://forums.creativecow.net/forum/apple_windows or at least go pose your question there. Tim is a forum host and I’ll bet he’ll respond with some valueable info…

    David,

Thanks so much for the tip, this looks like it may be just the thing! I’ll do some more investigating.

    Again, cheers.
