Ok, RAID 5 requires a minimum of 3 drives striped together, 5 is better. So you would require the RTX400 if you want to run in RAID 5, and yes you can do this according to their specs.

I only use the rtx for backing up projects since we have the EVO series from Maxx Digital and those run approx 500MB/s and up so we have a ton of speed from those units (8 to 16 drives in each unit).

We just put together a 12TB Raid 5 solution from OWC (Other World Computing) Consisting of a Sans Digital TR8M 8 Bay storage array , 8 – 1.5 TB drives, and a Highpoint 2314 eSata card all for under $2k. Right now it’s got all but 2tb full and we are able to get over 270 MB/s out of it. It’s the biggest bang for the buck that we’ve found.

Really? Running 8 drives? that’s the slowest speed I’ve ever heard of on an 8 bay array. Even the Dulce’s which do run slower, but more consistent than the others, run faster than that. That eSATA connectivity is killing your speed.

On our arrays 375MB/s is the absolute slowest we’ve seen with 525 to 575MB/s the fastest in RAID 5. Of course we run the SAS connections instead of eSATA.

And how much did you pay for that System? He’s considering a Drobo or Lacies 4 big Quadra, the setup that I listed in my post runs circles around those guys for roughly the same price with twice the storage space. 270 Mega Bytes is usually fast enough for most work, and that’s at 75% capacity.

At the time, $6,995 I think for 8TB.

Now it’s only $4,995 and that comes with the array, the SAS/SATA card, the cables and the RAID 5 software from ATTO or you can have it fully pre-configured before it ships so it’s just plug-and play. Incredibly cheap and you don’t have to do any self-service support.

has anyone have any experience with the caldigit hdelement hard drive.

I like the drive you posted walter but that is a little high in price.

i did find a good deal on a caldigit hd element though that includes a free 2 tb caldigit drive

and so i was wondering whether this product is worth buying or if i should stick to a maxx digital drive or a owc drive although i cannot find an 8 bay model but that is not that important to me.

i looked into the wiebetech rtx200 and found this is probably perfect for me but i was wondering if i set it to raid 1, so that i could easily back up projects in two spots at once, will i still be able to keep its easily pop in, pop out functionality?

this may seem to be a stupid question but it is a concern.

As long as you keep putting the same two drives back into their exact same position, yes, you can create a RAID with two drives and then pop them in and out. But you have to do both at the same time and you have to put them back in the same order when you re-insert them.
