August 24, 2007 at 8:15 pmRender with “none” compression.
The files will be huge, but they will be unchanged. No better, no worse.
Anything else (such as DVCPROHD) compresses the video. Uncompressed 8-(or 10-)bit, Animation, PNG and similar codecs compress with minimal quality loss — some with no quality loss, compressing like ZIP files.
To compare a compressed file with the original, lay one over the other in AE, and set the upper layer to Difference mode. You should see black if they’re close in quality. Move your mouse (rollover) the comp window and watch the RGB values in the info palette. The higher the values, the greater the difference between the two clips.

August 24, 2007 at 9:17 pmTry this:
Make your work area short. This will be a test render, so you don’t need to render the entire movie.
Select composition>make movie,
leave the settings as they are. Render. When that is done,
-View your movie in Quicktime Player, and tell us if it your movie is black.
-tell us what the render settings and output modules were for that movie. (for example, “Best quality”, and “lossless”)
