  • Best Quality: MP4 full quality OR DV codec?

Posted by Rick Dolishny on November 12, 2005 at 4:39 am

My client has requested CD’s for this animation job. Uncompressed quicktimes won’t fit. Destination: another FCP suite. What codec give me the best quality?

    Mpeg 4 or DV?

    What was it SHOT on?

If its DV, it will never get “better” than DV regardless.

Client wants 100 person marching band for the parade. Asks if you can send them over in a Volkswagen Beetle!

Put them on a DVD. Does he really want your work mashed? Do you look forward to the phone call asking why your animation looks like c**p.

Mash it down and give to him on a CD with a note that if he wants full quality you’re going to have to charge him again for a high quality transfer.

JPEG2000 maybe (not to be confused with standard jpeg).

For animation, use PhotoJPEG100% or perhaps, given that it’s destined for video PhotoJPEG75%.
