  • Best project properties and render settings for Vimeo HD?

    Posted by Norman Willis on July 7, 2009 at 5:16 pm

    Hello.

    What project properties and render settings can I use so that when I upload my project in HD to Vimeo, YouTube and others, that I will not have letterboxing?

    Source footage is 1920 x 1080 at 30p.

    Thank you.

    Norman

    I believe both Vimeo and YouTube expect 1280×720-30p for HD so this is what i would set my project at and render to.

    Thanks.

    The only 1280×720-30p setting I find is labeled “HDV.”

    Does it make any difference if my source footage is AVCHD (1920 x 1080)? Or is the “HDV” just a name they tag onto the 1280 x 720 setting, and it really makes no difference?

    I created a blog entry on this while ago here:

    Letterboxing is no issue since 1280×720 is same aspect ratio as 1920×1080. Only downside with Vegas is that downscaling is a bit soft compared to Tmpgenc. I do believe though that Vimeo will take MP4 1080p. E.g. choose Sony AVC/MP4 and choose custom and in system tab choose MP4.

    Since vimeo now will remove source file after a week for non-plus users I render now as 12M CBR 2 pass instead to get better online quality (but limits # of files obviously).

    HDV comes in two resolutions: 1280×720 PAR 1.000 and 1440×1080 PAR 1.3333.

    It will be scaled down to 1280×720.

    Hi Luc.

    >>I render now as 12M CBR 2 pass instead to get better online quality (but limits # of files obviously).

    Sorry, but I am new, and this went right past me.

    What is 12M CBR 2 pass?

    12M = bitrate (Mb/sec)

    CBR = Constant bit rate
    VBR = Variable bit rate

    Passes: 1 pass or multi-pass (Sony supports for couple of formats 2 pass). Multi-pass is necessary for average/peak VBR to first build histogram of scene complexity so it can assign higher bitrates to more complex scenes.

    Hi Luc.

    I apologize. This one went right past me also.

    What is the issue with downscaling being ‘soft’? Does it lessen the sharpness of the image?

    And how does Tmpgenc fit into the picture?

    See this thread: https://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/24/895472

    Imo Tmpgenc is a great renderer and Sony Vegas is a great editor. So I typically output as uncompressed YUV and then render final output with Tmpgenc as it has more rendering options and good downscale capabilities.

    Does tmpgenc do H.264?

    Yes Tmpgenc Xpress supports H264. Not best editor but definitely great renderer.
