I have wondered if not trimming overlapping video clips impacts performance?

Example: Video 1 has a “clip A” 10 seconds long and Video 2 has a cut away “clip B” 4 seconds long.
    Playback: Clip A (4 seconds), Clip B (4 seconds), Clip A (2 seconds).

Which is best practice, Trim Clip A at 4 seconds and at 8 seconds OR not to trim because of no performance impact?

Typically I trim clips to length, as needed, but recently I received an 80+ minute edited project for additional work which does not have the overlapping video trimmed to length. This project has been riddled with performance issues and I wonder if not trimming to length has contributed to less than expected performance.

    Thank you in advance.
