Looking for esata portable drive that doesn’t need to plug into ac for power. I’m working from my car alot, (have car charger +2 batteries). 4 way and biggest capacity preferred.

I like the one Caldigit makes, and I also like the one from iStorage Pro. Both are self powering and both are 4 way… Caldigit’s is quieter and a bit smaller… the beefy trays on the iStorage Pro are nice…

    Rennie,

I have esata 2.5 inch and firewire 2.5″ hard drives for my MacBook Pro. I prefer the Firewire. When I use two Macally 2.5″ drives in a mirrored raid (rubber-banded together with a metal spacer between them) it leaves the PCMIA Express slot open for my P2 Adaptec adapter to download P2 cards. I use the esata express card with two esata drives also. Same performance for both set-ups and both self powered.

The Macally enclosures are $39 each and a 500gb 2.5″ esata is $79.

Thanks for these suggestions. I’ll be looking into these other options as the 4 ways are not available to me in my imediate timeline.
