Apologies for posting in potentially the wrong category, but I couldn’t find one that seemed to fit exactly. I’m about to start using fcx and I’m in the market for a used Imac retina. Where do you guys suggest searching? I’ve been watching refurb imacs from apple as well as the obvious other places (amazon, ebay, etc). Just curious if there’s a specific company/resource I’m not aware of that you guys would recommend. Thanks for any info!

    OWC sells used: https://eshop.macsales.com/shop/Apple-Systems/Used/iMac?_ga=1.134189454.1850401098.1461414956

If you buy from here or Apple, and the computer is recent enough, you still get a warranty and can also purchase AppleCare if that’s important to you.

You could also check out the refurbished section of the Apple Store online.

If you guys don’t mind me asking on here. Do you recommend getting and imac with 256GB SSD storage? In all my research I’m still a little confused as to which kind of hard drive editors typically prefer. I always run my footage from external hard drives anyway. Just curious what you think. thanks!

256 is too small. 512 or 1TB would be the minimum.

Is it PCIe SSD? If so, there’d be a case that speed will matter. If it is just SATA SSD, then I’d opt for more storage.

1TB of PCIe SSD is ideal, if that’s not available, I’d go for a fusion drive with more storage. You will run out of 256GB too quickly.

Unfortunately, the only info it shows is that it’s 256GB SSD storage. I’d love to get you guys’ opinion on the potential purchase.

    USED VERSION
    “Excellent condition fully-loaded iMac Retina 5K 27″, late-2014 model with AppleCare through October 19, 2017. 4.0Ghz Intel Core i7 Quad, 32GB 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4GB GDDR5 graphics, and 256GB SSD storage.”

From what I can figure up I could get a brand new imac through apple for around $2550 (with the additional memory from crucial) that has a comparable configuration, yet slightly more current parts. OR the used system listed above.. which has an auction price and will continue to increase by the end time. I’m basically trying to figure out how much savings is worth going with the used version versus just having the brand new one.

At the moment I’m telling myself that if I can save $500 or so then it’s worth it to go used. Any thoughts from you guys? I greatly appreciate you taking the time to chime in!

Please remember that all of the video files want to be on external drives.

Not saying that sometimes I use my internal drive for video source files.

And 256 GB will get used up quickly with all sorts of other stuff (aka Apps and plug ins).
