  • best multi-bay external hard drive for editing HD with FCP7 ?

Posted by Nicholas Natteau on May 27, 2010 at 9:51 pm

A while back I had asked what the best 2TB hard drive would be for editing with FCP7. But it now looks like I will need about 8 to 10 TB of hard drive space for all of the HD footage I will be using.

What would be the best type of multiple-bay hard drive I could use to not only back up but also edit with?

I’ve heard several names mentioned: Drobo, Lacie, iStorage Pro.

I was going to buy a Drobo until I read a number of negative reviews about how Drobo is not nearly fast enough to edit with and not even that great for backup.

Thanks in advance for any advice,

    – Nicholas

Drobo is really an archive device.

Maxx Digital, Small Tree, Sonnet, Dulce and WeibeTech all make excellent products.

We run 48TB of Maxx Digital storage here with both 8 bay and 16 bay arrays that supports DV to 2k.

We also have a sweet 4 bay WeibeTech RTX-400 unit for archive.

Whatever you buy, make sure it runs in RAID 5 so you can protect your data.

Hi, Walter. I notice you mentioned your facility has the 4 bay WeibeTech RTX-400. I am very interested in that unit and would like your opinion on a choice I have to make, if you don’t mind.

Currently I have a DULCE PRODQg2 16TB I use for FC editing. Amazing piece of hardware. I love it, but VERY expensive. However, I live near DULCE and already had an emergency run to replace the power supply. They had me back up in hours. Whew! That has value.

I need RAID 5 storage space, but I want to use the drive as much for moving and accessing files as for Archiving. Speed is not the first priority, but reasonably important.

DULCE offered me a ProQ 4-bay unit with 3TB drives around $4,300

Even though it is PCIe and lightening fast, I’m curious from you if all I need is safe accessible storage, if I’m buying too much speed when I could buy TWO RTX-400’s for that price range.

One last thing. The 3 1/2 year DULCE warranty and “security” feeling plays a reasonable role. These guys hand delivered my fixed unit right to my front door, NO COST. I’m storing multi-million dollar marketing campaign shows. Can’t lose data!

Any advise and input will be greatly appreciated.
