Best Magic Lantern RAW Workflow?
I’m attempting to color grade Magic Lantern RAW clips with resolve. Running into several road blocks / items that take me an insurmountable amount of time…
1. Converting clips from Magic Lantern .RAW files into DNG image sequences.
Is there anying that allows clips to be opened in Magic Lantern without conversion to clip folders?
OR a simple conversion that changes the file type as apposed to making folders with thousands of images?
2. Using RAWanizer to convert .RAW to image sequence folders on Windows 10
Is there a better application? This makes .dng folders instead of -dng folders so I have to rename all the folders. Next it creates a dumie sound and proxy Tiff folder. Neither of which are of any use. If I do create proxy clips it messes up the folder structure. I’d like an application that will queue up clips to convert and does it without these issues. Know of anything?
3. Is workflow easier with a BlackMagic camera?
I’m assuming you don’t have to go through this conversion hassle if you have a blackmagic camera and shoot raw?
4. Any other tips?

Do you have access to a Mac? There is a great App I use called RAWMagic in the Apple App store that is designed to convert DNG. It’s a paid app that does Batch. They also make a lite version, no batch, for free. There is also Raw2DNG from MagicLantern that is also free.

Thanks Warren, unfortunately, I’m PC only. Seems Mac is gaining steam and the platform of choice for video now days. I tried raw2dng however, you have to do it clip by clip which takes time when I get 50 clips or more in a shoot.
I see RawMagic and have fingers crossed they come out with a PC version 🙂
I’m getting some KILLER shots with the RAW ML hack however, I see they quickly become strattified (not sure if that’s the correct word). Where I can see resolution of A2D sensor being blown out as I get empty spaces in signal as I pull up highlights and adjust gain.
BlagMagic shoots in Log? From what I understand that’s got more tolerance for such tweaking?

I’ve had success with ML. I did a lot of tests and don’t see the A2D conversion problem you are seeing. Could it be variations in the sensor manufacturing from camera to camera?
I’ve intentionally blown out a side walk in a hot and brought back all the detail in Resolve. It was an experiment to see how much latitude I had in RAW. It was pretty amazing.

I’m fairly new to this 🙂 Probably I don’t know how to shoot / edit raw quite perfectly yet?
Although, Log is a way of storing images that allows more data to be saved in the highlights so you can more easily edit. At least that’s what I understand.

Magic Lantern raw is beautiful! I am on Windows and I’ve used both RAWanizer and raw2cdng to convert the .raw files to DNG. I then run the DNG files through a program called Slimraw (see here https://www.slimraw.com ), which is very, very fast and does lossless compression on DNG video. This step shrinks the size of the raw video to less than half the original. I then use these compressed dngs directly in both Resolve and Premiere.
