Best Macbook Pro Laptop
Posted by Trevor Ambrose on February 15, 2011 at 4:20 pmHey guys,
I looking for any advice about purchasing a new macbook pro laptop.
(my G4 Powerbook just got stolen -darn- and I currently have a 8 core tower)
Is the $1799 2.4GHz more than enough for my FCP needs or is it wise to go to the 2.53GHz i5 or is it best to go 2.66 GHz i7?
If the more expensive laptops are more than enough I don’t see the point in paying extra
but
if they provide a significant difference in operation then I will go higher. Also, is four gigs of ram enough or should I get more.
Also also, any thoughts on the antiglare display?
All thoughts are appreciated,

Well you didn’t tell us your needs so we cannot say. But for anyone using FCP on a portable computer I always recommend the 17″ MBP the one reason you can use a esata express card with it.

More never hurts.

February 15, 2011 at 5:07 pmHi Zane,
Thanks for your input. I mainly work on TV shows and features on my Mac Pro Tower. I typically use my laptop for internet, calendar and other typical “normal” stuff.
Who knows what I’ll use my new laptop in the future. Perhaps an assistant station.
What would I get out of the esata express card?
Again, thanks for your help.

You can use any laptop for that, even the cheapest MacBook.
Now if you plan on ever editing on it that is another thing altogether.

Hard drive speed. eSata is 2x faster then FW800. And hard drive speed is HUGE when it comes to performance editing video.

Let me also add that the the Express card slot also gives you the ability of adding a real I/O device such as any of those in the Matrox MXO2 line. That means you can properly monitor video economically. The alternative, AJA’s I/O HD, connects via FW-800,, and it cannot do anything beyond ProRes — it costs a whopping $4500.

March 26, 2013 at 1:06 amJust had my 17″ MacBookPro stolen, now I need to deal with my insurance Co. I use the laptop for FCP, Lightroom, NIK and Pages etc. film, photography and writing basically. I have G-tech HD’s with eSata and FW800.
So, what to suggest to my insurer? The new books don’t have DVD slots or FW 800. They may have to add external storage to the plan . . .Any thoughts? Thanx.
