    Hey All,

If you could have your dream laptop for editing 4k video in premiere. What would it be? Specs? Would you still edit proxys or feel comforatble editing r3d files natively? I dont do alot of Afx haevy graphics but do alot of color correction.

    Thanks

I’m editing some R3D 5k just this morning on a Early 2103 MBP. 2.7i7, 16GB ram, 512 SSD. I’m using a SSD on a Seagate Thunderbolt adapter as my media drive. Works best at 1/8 resolution and easy enough to cut that way. The new MBP’s have a better card with 2GB ram as opposed to the 1GB in my set up.

Fastest Processor, Fastest Graphics Card, Maximum RAM.

That’s pretty much it. Whatever is the fastest / maximum today, that’s what you want.

Yeah, on the top of the line MBP these days you only have options for processor and hard drive size. They all get 16GB ram and latest nvidea card.

No WONDER it’s easy for you. You are running a machine from the future. How light are those 2103 models? Must be paper light!

Yeah it’s hard to find a machine that will even recognize 5k here in the future. Now that everyone is officially employed by facebook as an archivist (thanks to the camera phone) work is harder and harder to come by. Thankfully, Google Glass never caught on (though some are still trying) and, in case you’re wondering, LA still doesn’t have an NFL team.

I just took delivery this week of my new 15″ MBP. I maxed out everything possible on it – quad core 2.8 i7, 16GB RAM and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M with 2GB v-RAM. I really wish you could take it up to 32GB RAM, but even with 16, this machine kicks. I’m cutting a project today that was shot in 4K on a GH4, so not exactly super high bit-rate, but I can work with the native files right out of the camera on the timeline in Premiere and it has no problem down-converting them or cropping them and keeps up with my pace quite nicely.

As a general sentiment, Walter is spot on. Spend the money on the best/most you possibly can. The difference between the absolute best and saving a little bit isn’t that much these days and it’s paid for after a job or two and every spec bump will make it easier for you to focus on the creative side of your work and not the technical side.

The one that cost around 4k is best for 4k editing, lol
