  • Best HDV to SD DVD conversion?

Posted by Jaanus Henno on February 18, 2011 at 3:07 pm

    Hi!

I want to understand what is the best way of getting HD material downscaled into SD DVD in best possible quality. There are some guides in the net of how to do that, but what is the latest up to date solution?
I read about Premiere pro CS5 having good results in downscaling into SD dvd (and that was not possible in eariler versions). What about Vegas Pro 10?

And what should be the conversion settings for end users, mainly watching the videos on laptops?

    Thanks for any help!

Vegas Pro has always done an exceptional job of upscaling and downscaling. Probably the finest tool for this sort of work. You can set your project up for DVD Widescreen and use HD media, or use an HD project and convert when you render to DVD Widescreen. Either way Vegas Pro will do a great job.

Thanks a lot John, that’s all I needed to know. I was wondering why when following one guide for best quality downscaling, I didn’t get any better results than using mainconcept.

I’m new to HD and recently buyed a camcorder Sony HDR-CX110 to try it out (read many good reviews about it), but the results are not as good as expected, atleast on a laptop screen. After rendering to SD DVD with all the effects I could think of to make it better, it actually comes out ok, not HD quality of course, but still I was expecting more sharpness and less noise. Anyway, I mean there must be a difference in mainstream camcorders and professional equipment, cannot expect more than possible.

    Thanks for making it clear!

Well… it should look as good as an SD DV camera would have and perhaps slightly better but with 5 time less resolution… there is no way it’s gonna look anywhere close to HD. If you want HD, get a Blu-ray burner and player and work in HD. If you are disappointed that HD downscaled to SD looks as bad as SD then… it is because… that’s what it is… just SD at that point.
