Best HD Setup?
Posted by Bronek on November 28, 2006 at 10:11 pmI am looking at purchasing a new Apple computer to do some DVCPRO HD film work. I know that the new Mac Pros are fast and reliable – but what is the ideal set up (i.e. how much ram, memory, etc., etc.) for an HD workflow? Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

4 GB RAM
(2) Dell 2407 Monitors (cheaper and better than Apple 23″)
4×500 GB drives in the drive trays
System drive and additional drive tucked underneath the optical: https://www.hdforindies.com/2006/11/maxconnect-allows-more-internal-hard.html#links (Something I have been stating ever since this computer came out)
AJA Kona 3 Capture Card….upconvert DVCPRO HD to uncompressed HD in real time on output to D5 or HDCAM. Upconvert SD footage to HD, downconvert HD to SD…all in real time.
Mixer: manual ones like the Mackie or Behringer are good, or you can get a Tascam FW1082…
M-Audio speakers.
HD Monitor. This will be your biggest expense, believe it or not. The cheap Sony PVM14L5 is no longer made or sold, nor is the 20L5. You can try to find them used, but monitoring HD for color correction is the debate lately. My suggestions…

November 28, 2006 at 11:36 pmIf you can afford the 3Ghz, get it. Always get the best you can afford. Just know that if you get the 2.66 Ghz, you have more money for RAM and drives and such, and the diff between the 2.66 and 3.0 might be mere seconds. But, if you can afford the 3.0 and everything else, get it. Means you will go longer before you are sorely oudated by the newer models.

The front runner so far that I’ve seen are the Panasonic 1700 and 2600W LCD HD displays as far as an HD monitor for the edit suite. They look amazing and the general consensus I’ve heard is that they are far better than the Sony Luma series at replicating black.
