Best Green Screen Solution
Hey everyone,
I was debating if this was the correct forum for this post so I apologize if its not.The company I am working for is looking to improve their green screen studio and I’m looking for any suggestions.
They are currently using green cloth, which has its obvious down falls, the biggest being the wrinkles. I’ve always worked with solid hard stages like painted wood etc. What would be best? This does not have to be portable.
Lighting
If anyone could recommend any good resources and types of lights that would be appreciated.A majority of the videos we do are full body, walks ons stuff like that. The current space we have is on the smaller side, however we have very high ceilings.

If you can test this first, do so.
Reflecmedia’s solution will always put a small halo (what looks like a very slight shadow) around any of it’s subjects. If the space is lit well, and there is good backlighting (and you can open up the iris a little bit) and you have a decent keyer you can get good results.
It’s great for down and dirty setups, but the damn halo / shadow is really a pain.
Rent or test with it first!

Go to the lighting forum and do a search for “green screen”. You will find tons of info.
In general, you want to have ample space between the talent and screen and ample space between the talent and cam. Then you want to light the screen evenly and separately from talent. Kino flos work well on screen. There are stands and clips that allow you to stretch out fabric to help with wrinkles. An industrial quality hand steamer helps too. Painting with high quality green screen paint on flat surfaces works too.
You can also do a search on FCP forum for “green screen” or “pulling a key” or “chroma key.” Also try Google. This is a very popular subject. You might want to search for green screen studio design as well.
If you are thinking bigger budget try “green screen cyc” and see what’s out there. If you budget is big enough hire a studio designer.

The best green screen is made of spandex, never a wrinkle in sight. clip it to a frame and its perfect. We get them from Composite Systems in Los angeles and they are the inventor of Digital green and have the tech Oscar for it.

Another issue with “reflect media” is if your subject is wearing eyeglasses or has shiny jewelry on.
This “direct reflection” can result in “holes” in your keys where you may not want them. (Great for horror pix is you want a “man with no eyes” effect!)Definitely test, test, test.
