I did search for this answer, but must not have kit the correct keywords.
Here’s what I’m trying to do:
Have a 30 minute program – mostly v/o and interviews, but want to tage a 30-60 second open at the beginning of the program. The open is fairly complex (composites, layering and motion and drags down my system) so I’d like to create it as it’s own project and then export the finished video and import THAT into the final 30 min project as a stand alone piece.

My question is thus: what settings would be the best choice for exporting to reimport into Vegas, considering my original footage is AVCHD 30p – that’s what I’ll be tacking this onto.

    Thanks.

Unless you are using Movie Studio, there is no need to render at all. Just drop your project will all of the compositing into your main project and it will behave like any other piece of media. This is know as “nested projects”.

If you want to render I would use the QuickTime Animation codec. It carries an alpha channel so if this compositing has any overlays you retain your transparency. Otherwise CineForm is an excellent codec for multiple re-renders but you’d have to purchase that. Lagarith and Huffyuv are also lossless codecs. Finally, if you’re not to picky, render to Sony MXF. It is lossy but you probably won’t see any appreciable loss with only one generation.

Thanks for the tips John. I’ll try nesting first and if I still have a problem I’ll check into your other suggestions. Thanks for giving a number of options to choose from.

Nesting should work. I use it all the time for complicated openings that I don’t want cluttering up my timeline.
