best format for long-term archiving?
I have an upcoming project for a client who wants us to capture their subject, a man in his 90s, before he is unavailable and create an archive of footage. I usually shoot in 720P/24N on my HVX-200, but I wonder if it’s the best approach for this project, in which no one yet knows how the footage will ultimately be used. Any recommendations?

Maybe I wasn’t clear enough. I need to choose the most useful solution (from options available to me with my HVX-200 only). Should I shoot as I usually do in 720/24pN since I like the way it looks and it saves card space… or shoot 10801 since it’s what PBS demands, and that’s the most likely broadcast outlet.
Truth is, I won’t know any actual outlets when I shoot.

It doesn’t really make a huge difference- 720p from that cam scales up to 1080p without looking a lot different from native 1080p. I wouldn’t worry about long term storage for any particular reason. Sell your footage now because in a couple of years everyone will want 4K 3D anyway… 🙂

Shoot 720p60 with shutter off or 1/60.
That way you can get the best quality when converting to:
1) 1080p30, dropping every other frame and resize
2) 1080i60, one frame becomes one field and resize
3) 1080p60 (maybe used in future), just resize
4) 1080p24, inverse telecine might result some stutter if lots of movement -
24p is way more flexible than 60Hz. I’d shoot 24pN.
You can easily go to 60 or 50Hz this way.

Yeah I wouldn’t shoot 60p unless a client demanded it and even then I’d try and talk them into 24p instead…
