  • Best Format for Archive and Edit. Is it H.264?

My organization produces a lot of event video for the web, usually 1-2 hours each event. We have recorded to all sorts of media in the past, but are going all tapeless from here on out. After the event we do some minor editing and then post the event.

When archiving, we flush the original project and raw media and hang onto only the produced media for future use. We keep the event as 640×480 H.264, and in the past we have kept this as the only archived media. But in rare cases we’ll go back to the old events to cut them into new FCPs and I’ve noticed that H.264 is really tough to edit with in FCP. There are lots of glitches in rendering, and incorporating with other formats is cumbersome, even with the supposed flexible timeline.

What would be a good low density archive format for media that allows incorporation into future FCP projects?

    Thanks! I love the Cow!

H264 is a delivery format only. Not for editing or archiving. If you’re concerned about file size I would recommend Photo jpeg. Otherwise, try ProRes or Sheer, both way less file size than 8 bit uncompressed.

    Have a wonderful day.

I agree with Chris. The best option for archiving may be PhotoJPEG 75%.
Is 422 and makes files smaller than DV.
