Hi all. I’m trying my best to set the render settings in Vegas so that when I upload to Vimeo, it will not recompress. They have s page of guidelines for doing this, here: https://vimeo.com/help/compression

My video is 640 x 480, 29.97, square pixel, progressive scan. I am using the MainConcept AVC/AAC mp4 encoder in Vegas 8, as it’s supposed to be h.264. I’m using the data rates recommended on the Vimeo page.

After uploading, my video still looks lower quality and recompressed, with more compression artifacts.

Anybody around here have any experience uploading SD video to Vimeo?

The tutorials listed on the right side of that compression web page you linked say to use the Sony AVC template when rendering, not the Main Concept one. They are only showing tutorials for Vegas 9-11 though, and even though I had Vegas 8, I can’t remember if it had the Sony AVC template. Not sure if it would fix the issue, but worth a look.

    Use your Sony AVC Template.

All video hosting sites recompress your files. What Vimeo’s recommendations are doing is to minimize the damage that recompression does to the video quality, but all hosting sites recompress your files.

Are you using Vimeo Pro or free? I believe quality is lower on the free version.

Vimeo Plus also has better AVCHD playback than Vimeo Free.

Are these settings recommended for Youtube?

YouTube seems to be a moving target – it’s upload specs “evolve”, but I use the same media to upload to either hosting service.
