Best encoder for HD => standard DVD?
After happily using Compressor for many projects, I am now doing my first “big” (going to replication) DVD project that originated as HD.
My original is 1080 24p (sony EX1) and the delivery vehicle is still going to be “good old” MPEG2 / standard DVD. I’m willing to spring for an affordable alternative (sorenson?) if someone with experience can explain what and why such an alternative would be better than Compressor. (Not that I believe Compressor is fabuluous, just that I already own it)
For the purposes of this question I am not interested in the prowess of tools for encoding to H264 or making a Blu-ray, etc. Just the best way to deliver as much picture quality as possible to a DVD

If you want the best quality, and with using only free utlities, you should read this article:

The method involves using a highly tuned downscaling algorithm in conjunction with a free mpeg2 encoder, called HC Encoder. The results are better than any NLE program or separate encoding software such as squeeze or tmpgenc. You will be impressed. Programs are only for the PC, but will work in Boot camp or maybe even Parallels.

I tried that method a few months ago and didn’t find it to be any better than Main Concept. In fact some of my results weren’t as good.
Have you tried FAVC? https://www.videohelp.com/tools/FAVCEasy to use with good results. Haven’t tried a conversion with a menu yet though.
