there doesn’t seem to be too many options as far as EDL’s go.

I have a show shot in varicam and offlined in downconverted DV.

need to up res it to 8 bit

I want to build an EDL and batch capture at 8 bit HDSDI

I have tried an XML but that gave me nothing.

I have done a CMX 3600, but it seems to be missing filters & speed control data.

what is the best list to generate?

can’t make the material offline and just recapture. there is way too much material for my drives.

You need to do what you say you can’t do in your last line, but you need also use the Media Manager to create a new offline sequence where you’ve deleted all the unused media from it.

Select your sequence, then choose File->Media Manager…

    Choose “Create Offline”
    Select your sequence preset
Turn ON all the remaining checkboxes, enter your desired handle size.

    Save the new project file.

We usually do that using CMX3600, works fine. Speed control, crossfades, flip-flops are natively supported, also Final Cut likes to add some commented tags that enable some additional effects but only if you open it back with Final Cut.
You generate and open EDL with FCP, right?

Wes has the answer. IF you are doing the online in FCP anyway, an EDL is very pointless. Using the media manager like he suggested is the proper way to do this.

I copied and pasted the vido portion of the timeline to a new sequence and then generated an edl from that timeline so there would be no audio edits which are many.

It seems the new timeline did not recieve the “filter” data when i pasted.
thats odd. i thought it would have. so it was me not the Edl.

I do do CMX 3600 by the way.

    Thanks

Don’t do an EDL. That is very OLD thinking. If you are onlining in FCP, use the MEDIA MANAGER, and the steps that Wes outlined.

EDLs are old old OLD technology.

I confess that I am an old Online editor.

I will get the books out and see what Media manager can do for me
    Thanks

OK so I tried that and what I get, still wants me re capture entire reels of material even though there is only a few min of material on it.

don’t see how to stop that in media manager.

[Dale Larsen] “don’t see how to stop that in media manager.”

Did you select “Delete Unused Media”? It sounds scary but it doesn’t actually delete anything from your disk, just consolidates the information in the new sequence.

If you do that and set a handle size, it will just recapture the shots in the final edit with handles, not whole reels.

EDLs will not carry forward a whole lot of info so read the manual, experiment with a small sequence and you will get the hang of the Media Manager settings.
