Tom, Thank You for a testing app. I have ran one test on drive C (SSD) and E (RAID 0). Here are the results, and – as You have predicted – they are not so good :/

Test: Disk Read + Write Test
    Disk: C: (SSD)
Video Frame Size: 2048×1556 10-bit RGB
    File size: 8 GB
    ——————
    Write speed: 483 MB/s
    Read speed: 510 MB/s

Test: Disk Read + Write Test
    Disk: E: (RAID 0)
Video Frame Size: 2048×1556 10-bit RGB
    File size: 8 GB
    ——————
    Write speed: 284 MB/s
    Read speed: 287 MB/s

Tell me please the details of Your setup (especially the RAID related stuff). I would like to upgrade my system, but would like to use some already tested, and proven solutions – yours looks alike 🙂

    Thanks in advance.

Walter thank You for the low-budget solution 🙂 I will try to render those sequences from AE as a CineForm coded material (by the way – is it possible, or do I have to convert sequences rendered from AE in GoPro CineForm Studio?), and we will see if the responsiveness of system will be better.

One thing I still don’t get – why there are problems with previewing even in 1/8 2K???

Those are pretty good speeds on your raid but I dont think they are good enough for media that is 2K 10bit.

Like I said, I have never worked with image sequences so Im not aware of how PrP likes to work with them.

Here is a link to my raid. At about 1000 MB/sec. (read/write) I can play 2K Red files at 1/2 resolution (the setting for PrP right Program window) just fine.

[Michal Poniedzielski] “I will try to render those sequences from AE as a CineForm coded material (by the way – is it possible, or do I have to convert sequences rendered from AE in GoPro CineForm Studio?)”

Yes, you can render directly to CineForm from Ae, or transcode your existing image sequence.

Previewing at low resolution decreases effects rendering requirements on the CPU or GPU because you have fewer pixels to process. It does not decrease disk requirements because you still have to read the enter frame from disk before reducing it to 1/8 resolution for further processing.

Hey guys, I am pretty new to all of this. I just had to jump ship from my old trusty 2006 Mac Pro after all of these years and build a pretty good PC solely for video editing in CS6 Premiere Pro. I am having some little bugs that just don’t seem to be right and I wonder if it is because I need some codecs or need to do something to complete my setup. It also seems that this should be a lot faster than it is.

I would be so grateful for a leg-up with this if anyone of willing.

    My Setup:

    Windows 7 Professional
    I7 CPU
    32 Gbs RAM
Geforce GTX 680 w/2Gbs ram onboard
    Gigabyte GA-X79-UD5 motherboard
    CS6 Premiere Pro.

I have installed ONLY the Premiere Pro CS6 program and then learned that i also needed to install Quicktime because it otherwise not allow me to import and of my clips. This is all that I have done other than a small file edit at the suggestion of Studio One to make a simple file edit in order for my GTX 680 to be recognized with Mercury and Cuda acceleration.

Example of an issue I am having: I was just trying to edit a clip with the razor tool and each time I click the timeline to make the cut I get the “spinning circle of death” for two minutes or more. Then sometimes the screen goes to this odd washed out look with a whitish hue before coming back to normal after the spinning do-hicky goes away.

Is there a basic element to my setup that is missing? Codecs, setting on the PC somewhere? Any suggestions? I am desperate to get this thing running properly. I have the latest Nvidia drivers and heard that there may be an issue with the 3.7 9I think that’s the number) and that I might need to roll back the driver. Haven’t tried that yet because i want to ask first. Thanks for whatever help you can offer. Pete

by the way: typo where I mentioned the Nvidia driver: Its 306.97 I believe. Also: the clips I am using are MP4 out of my GoPro2 at 1080P and 60 FPS if this helps.

Thanks Walter! I appreciate your time for responding, and your style of respond – very reasonable, and in a noob-friendly way :). Thanks again!

Thanks for the link Tom. I have wrote to the Dolce systems for advice, since this RAID, which You have is rather too expensive for me. I’m looking for something with less storage space (about 1TB will suffice), but with some better speeds then mine (500MB/s=My SSD, 280 MB/s=My RAID0).
I’m waiting for reply from Dulce, but I don’t know if I will ever get one – my inquiry is low-budget :/ Please tell me Tom – do You know some lower-budget hard drive solutions, which are still better than my acctual RAID0/SSD setup?

A lot of replies! Seems that I’m not the only one with questions about the best codec for editing. I think It’s hard to find the ‘right’ answer within all the information that is available.

Is there a simple answer to the following question? I just shot a lot of footage with my Canon 600d and my Mac is not that powerful (2.5 Intel Core 2 duo with 8GB of memory). What is the best codec to convert the material that I transferred directly from my SD card to my Mac, so that I can reduce the rendering time as much as possible in Premiere? (CS6) Maybe use handbrake to convert my material to Apple Prores?
