I recently used ClipWrap 2 (v2.2) to convert (rewrap) a batch of 1080p30 clips from M2T to MOV. The resulting clips come in as 24-bit Integer (Little Endian), Stereo (L R), 48.000 kHz
    Apple HDV 1080p30, 1440 x 1080 (1888 x 1062), Millions in the QuickTime movie inspector window.

In using ClipWrap I selected the Rewrap (Don’t alter video samples). The box marked “Convert Audio to LPCM” was already checked.

While the clips drop right into the timeline, I’m wondering if I should have selected something else for ease of editing. The options include Apple Intermediate Codec, Apple Pro Res 422, Pro Res 422HQ, DV and DVC PRO HD.

This is an area of confusion for me. I know some formats are better for editing in Final Cut, including Pro Res 422, but I don’t know whether Apple HDV 1080p30 is one of them. Does anyone know – or is there a list I could consult?

Final output will go online only, no larger than 480 by 270 pixels.

    thanks

Edit codecs are the ones listed in the Easy Setups. FCP will edit HDV, but many here recomend conversion to ProRes422 as it puts the least overhead on the computer hardware but it does increase the file size so more hard drive space.

If it is a simple timeline then HDV is fine, but do change the render settings to proRes so the final renders will be done as ProRes. Some here recommend using a ProRes422 timeline if there is a mix of codecs, stills and graphics.

As the project is just starting, it’s easy to switch to ProRes 422, which I will do.

A second question – and I”m not sure it’s related to this one .

I began this project with all 166 converted (to HD) clips in the project, and the project crashed. The project document is GONE. I’d done no editing on the timeline, but was opening the clips in the bin and making notes about the shots in the Log Notes column. THAT’S when I began wondering if I had converted to the wrong format. What surprises me is – where did the project file go? There is no evidence it every existed – anywhere.

    Any thoughts?

Also – what about Apple Intermediate Codec as an editing format?

AIC is an old legacy codec which has been superseeded by the vastly superior ProRes family of codecs, so I don’t recommend it. It is very lossy. ProRes is virtually lossless.

No idea where the project file went. It must have corrupted to the point where it is not even visible as a file by Finder. You could search for it with Spotlight but as there isn’t any useful edit info, I wouldn’t bother as it might just crash FCP and create other problems. It might be worth doing the usual maintenance – Trashing preferences and repairing permissions. Details on this can be found by searching this forum.
