    Hi all,

I am dropping DVCPROHD 720p 60fps clips into an existing timeline that’s DV50 29.97 (lower field).
I know it’s going to look a little soft in the conversion. What workflow or settings has anyone applied to get the best results?
I tried a direct drop in the timeline and an export and re-import in FCP along with a render in AE. FCP looks better, but I’m not quite happy with the results. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,

    Steve

Don’t render fields in the DV50 timeline, change the ‘field dominance’ to none.

    Tried Compressor?

Didn’t try Compressor yet, that’s next.

[Steve Radley] “What workflow or settings has anyone applied to get the best results?”

Use a Kona card to do a realtime downconvert in hardware. It’s a pristine downconversion. You simply edit away in HD and then play out from your HD timeline to your DV50 deck in realtime.

If this will be a normal part of your workflow, invest in the Kona series.

MPEG Streamclip (our free Swiss-knife) is doing a good job and is much faster than Compressor, but if you need this regularly, do what Walter suggested: get a Kona!

Thanks Walter. That’s kind of what I figured.

[Steve Radley] “Thanks Walter. That’s kind of what I figured.”

    My pleasure.

The primary differences between the Kona LH and the Kona 3 are these:

LH (or LHe) features Analog and Digital inputs and outputs.
Kona 3 features Digital inputs only with some analog outputs.

LH (or LHe) can perform HD to SD downconversion in realtime.
Kona 3 can perform SD to HD Upconversion, HD to SD Downconversion and 720 to 1080i / 1080i to 720 Cross Conversion.

You can get adapters like the HD10AVA to get analog signals into the Kona 3. That’s what we use here. We also have an Io LA to give us more analog I/O options in SD.
