best drive brand for HD?
Posted by Todd Volz on March 14, 2007 at 10:20 pmHi – I’m setting up a RAID 0+1, and I’m wondering which brand of SATA drive you’d recommend using, i.e. WD, Seagate, Hitachi, Maxtor, etc. Thanks!

March 14, 2007 at 11:25 pmI’ve been using Seagate for years without very few problems, and there are very few other drives that I can trust as much (OK, none). I had some VERY bad luck with Western Digital, although I haven’t bought one since they changed their guaranty from 4 years to one (that was a few years back, they may have improved).
Maxtor, again, I had some bad luck with, even further back, but in all honesty, most of these companies have consumer and pro grade products, you either spend the money or take a chance.

March 14, 2007 at 11:38 pmEveryone is going to have a favorite drive brand, I’ve used Seagate, WD, and Maxtors with no problems for intergrating systems, mostly Maxtors, to minimize drive problems with any brand is to keep them cool, if they get too hot to touch, they’re too hot. IBM/Hitachi drives picked up a bad rep a few years back with the DeathStar desktop drives, I’m sure their QC has improved by now.

March 15, 2007 at 6:30 pmSeagate owns Maxtor now just as an FYI. So if you plan on going with a Maxtor you might as well get the Seagate instead, I’m not sure how long the Maxtor name will be around for.
