I am editing (in FCP 6) footage shot in HDV, 60i (from a SONY camera, I believe).
My timelines are all native HDV, matching the footage, which has the framerate of 29.97 interlaced.

In terms of generating a DV NTSC master, What is the best way to maintain image and temporal quality when downsizing to DV NTSC 29.97 interlaced?
Should I simply plug the HDV timeline into a DV (anamorphic or not?) timeline?
Should I export a HDV QT and then import it into a DV timeline?
Should I use Compressor or AfterEffects?

When it comes to making a SD DVD (NTSC), should I export straight from the HDV timeline or should I use the DV NTSC timeline / master QT?

    Much thanks for any info!

I’ve found the best way to do this (and this is the best, though not quickest) is to render out the full rez movie, then in Compressor export it out to 8bit uncompressed NTSC, and setting the frame Controls on and to settings of: Resize Filter to Better (or higher), Output Fields to Progressive, Deinterlace to Better (or higher), and rate conversion to Good (or better). Also verify your Geometry settings to the the desired look. (Based on 4×3 or 16×9, keep an eye on your preview window to get the look you need)
Again, I am sure there are quicker ways, but from what I’ve found, going from upper fields to lower (HDV to DV) can be a real pain.

    Hope this helps

I have found what Tim says to be the best way.

I set the resizer quality to best.

I go a bit of a different route … Though the ones stated already are great way from Tim … I just find the other route as a different alternative.

What I do is take a COPY … YES COPY of the original Edited Timeline and Set the Media to Offline. Then go back to the deck set it to BATCH CAPTURE the whole Timeline in DVCAM Crop Mode. This way your are DOWNCONVERTING HARD WARE WISE. I found that to be a faster solution and the hardest thing to do it reload the tapes. Once it is all said and done. The clips will be SD Formated and ready for export like normal. You might have to also change your Sequence settings to the Standard Format as well.

    Good Luck,

…and not to mention MUCH less expensive in terms of disk space…
