Best Deinterlace settings for Vegas
OK I have footage shot with in normal North American HD.
I want to deinterlace the rendered version so it doesn’t look like video but film.
What is the best settings in Vegas for this?
THe reason I ask is because some deinterlace settings in Vegas make the result look blurry and I’m thinking I am doing something wrong.

Oh and it was not shot at 25p – if that makes a difference

To be exact – original footage is 29.970 fps interlaced, 1440x1080x12, AVC

There are only 2 deinterlace settings built into Vegas: Blend and Interpolate.
Blend will simply merge the 2 interlaced fields, and can result in “ghosting” where there is fast movement.
Interpolate will throw away one field, and make up the missing lines in the other field, which means you lose some vertical resolution.
If you need better deinterlacing, you need to look at plugins or an external deinterlacer.

Just to add to Matt’s excellent description, you probably also want to render to 24p if you want the cadence of film. That would make the frame rate 23.976 progressive. If you didn’t shoot with 24p in mind, you may get jerky movement. This is to be expected. If you want to deliver 24p you need to learn how to shoot for 24p.
