Best compression S16 transfer to miniDV… NOW WHAT?

Hey COWCommunity:

I shot a film in Super 16mm and had it transfered (1.66:1) to miniDV to edit. HD transfer costs are way out of my budget.

I’ve edited the film in Final Cut.

I’m planning to project the film onto a screen roughly 20 feet wide.

How would you suggest I export/compress to obtain the BEST QUALITY possible?

Thank you all in advance! This film is so important to me, and it really is too bad that the HD transfer is out of the question.

How is it going to be played back? What format? A Macintosh? QuickTime? h.264?

How was the transfer done? 23.98 or 30i?

You want to do the least amount of damage of what comes out of FCP….and it’s still (unfortunately) going to look like an SD video blown up.

Hey Jeff: Thanks for responding!

I will project the film (not sure of the make/model of the projector) using a MacBook Pro, and it will be a quicktime file.

I’m going to reverse telecine my footage back to 23.98

Any advice on compression settings to boost the quality would be appreciated.

No – just do the least amount of compression for your material after you’ve made it back to 23.98.
