best compression for fcp output to dvd
hello-
i am completing a project using FCP 2, and will soon send the project to Compressor for final output in preparation to create dvd’s. My question is this: What compression choice generates the highest quality video/audio output in Compressor, assuming my goal is to only create DVD’s? The project length is approximately 10 minutes. I plan to burn the DVD’s using IDVD or DVD Studiopro.

If you are using iDVD, you don’t need to use Compressor.
Export a Quicktime movie. Drop that into Compressor. Find the preset that meets your requirements. Since your video is only 10 minutes, it shouldn’t be to difficult. If you have trouble, the manual tells you exactly what to do.

What DVD authoring program are you using?
If you’re using DVD Studio Pro, I always export a FCP Quicktime Reference file and then import that into DVDSP,
Before importing that file in DVDSP, I go into Preferences > Encoding. I set the average bit rate to 4Mbps and the max bit rate to 6.5Mbps.
DVDSP will automatically make the MPEG files for you.

Never use DVDSP to compress your streams. Use Compressor – that’s whats its there for. Personally, with something that short I would use a CBR encode of about 7.0. Compressor’s VBR can be a little iffy sometimes (depending on the footage)
