  • Best codec to choose on export for compositing in AE? (with Alpha)

    Hello.
I have a project that i want to export and then composite in AE. I would also like to export with an alpha channel.

So i was wondering, what do people normally go for when it comes to choosing a codec with an alpha channel for compositing in another program? Out of the Quicktime codecs.
I know of Animation and PNG. Are they the ones most widely used??

I tried Animation at about 85% and it’s horrible to composite/edit with.

I’m using Mac by the way.

If you have Final Cut 7 installed on your system, ProRes 4444 would be another choice to work with. It supports alpha channels. I usually use Animation or PNG also, but ProRes 4444 would be an alternative you could try.

As a general rule it’s best to render image sequences. That way, if something goes south you don’t have to start over from frame one. tif and psd work well for 16 bit renders (recommended).

Okay. Unfortunately i don’t have FCP on my computer. I’ve heard of that codec but never knew it came from FCP.

Exporting as an image sequence seems a very good way to go, i’ve never thought of that before.

    Thanks for the info.
