    We just upgraded 3 edit suites from Cinewave to (discontinued) to FCP Studio 2 and added AJA KONA LH and LE cards in the various Macs.

    I notice the render time is longer with Kona than with Cinewave. OTHER THAN UNCOMPRESSED –
    Is there a good choice codec for rendering, capturing, and sequence that offers good performance, compatibility with after effects, and quality for real-time playback to tape?

    We thought photo-jpeg – but Kona seemed to indicate that it didn’t make good use of the LH/LE card.

    They suggested Apple Pro-Res (Kona ver) 4;2;2 HQ. The quality is good – but it is not too friendly to our older projects that were captured in photo-jpeg or cinewave.

    What is everyone out there using and why?

    I like Apple ProRes 422 for HD stuff these days on faster machines with FCS 2. I don’t have really any experience in Photo JPEG for editing but only when I want to compress something for transport on the web. You might want to give DVCPRO HD a try and see how that works for you. I edit natively a lot with DVCPRO HD coming into a Kona 3 and the results are nice.

    RT extreme does not support jpeg.

    ProRes, DVCPROHD, or UC are the best choices.

    One thing I forgot to mention – we are a broadcast station – and we are still editing in SD – we haven’t made the jump to HD.

    So the codec would be for SD.

    Also in what formats does the Kona LH card offer excelleration if any??

    IMX 50 or 30 are alternative solutions to ProRes. IMX 50 is 4:2:2 and is virtually losless. IMX 30 is a 4:2:2 solution to DV. The naked eye cannot tell the difference between IMX50 and UC, and you have a 1/4 the space taken up.

    We shoot on IMX 50 with the Sony Discams – I am reluctant to use it because not many others have the codec.

    We have also just purchased a computer with flip factory – to export commercials in file form to our corporate server –
    It won’t convert IMX 50 or pro-res –

    It just gets more fun each day!

    We have been using it for over 3 year with no problems, there are a lot of people using via XDCam disc. But it is not just limited to XDCAM you can capture in the IMX codec with the AJA cards. Flip 4 Mac makes a product for $500 but Sony has a converter for free that encodes or decodes at 12x realtime on Intel Macs.
