Best choice for downloading archival footage?
Hello clever people – I want to download some copyright-free archival footage from Prelinger to use in a short piece I’m editing in Premiere and I’m not sure what to do with all these download options they list:
256kb real media
512kb MPEG4
64kb real media
Cinepack
H.264
Hires MPEG4
Item tile
MP3
MPEG2
OGG video
Subrip
TorrentIn the past I had just used H.264, but now I’m wondering if a different choice would be better image quality or play more nicely with premiere.
Any thoughts? -

Then you may want to transcode to Cineform, ProRes or DNx for smoother editing. Long-GOP codecs like h264 take a lot of processing to edit and play back, so if you’re going to use a lot of them, making new files for editing might be worth checking out.

Whoever the “archivist” is, isn’t that good at archiving. Those are all HORRIBLE formats…not one is a “mastering” format. High Res H.264…OK, that sounds the best, hope it is. But good lord, so many of those other options…”Real media,” “OGG Video?” CINEPACK? It’s like they are living in the 1990s.
