    Best Capture Codecs

    Hi,

    I just wanted to know what anyone else is using to capture in material for encoding to MPEG2.

    I am using a BlackMagic SDI Card on MAC OSX. Source is PAL 720×576 DigiBeta. MPEG 2 is encoded with Cinemacraft.

    I have always used NONE to capture in as file sizes are not an issue but one one recent job the final encode looked noticably Darker in a couple of scenes. The source is a feature all shot at night.

    I ended up using “Uncompressed 8bit” which gave slightly lighter results but with slightly less satuartaion.

    Any workflows/codecs anyone else uses would be good to know.

    Use 10-Bit Uncompressed, only slightly larger file size than 8-bit but why not keep all the color info you can.

    I have read about issues using “NONE” the Uncompressed setting is just safer to use and there is no compression happening.

    There will always be a quality lose when going to m2v files, they are highly compressed and you are going down from 4:2:2 color space to 4:2:0, the quest is to keep it as close to the original footage as possible.
