Best camera to purchase…
Hi Guys,
I have just started a video production company in Adelaide, South Australia (DeckChair Media) I am specialising in producing short videos for including in my customers websites… Some of the videos will need to be fast turnaround…..
I am looking to upgrade my camera and have been considering a JVC HY700 and a Panasonic HVX 172 (PAL version of HVX 170)
My preference is for a tapeless workflow to increase the efficiency of my productions.
Main difference I can see is the manual lens in the HY700…. I haven’t much experience using a manual lens and Im not sure what the advantages/ disadvantages are…
The larger zoom lens seems like a good idea, but I note the HVX 172 has a digital zoom… can anyone comment on how well this performs?
Any other considerations I should make…

What NLE will you be using for post? And have you considered DSLR cameras as well? I’m all over the 170 class of Panasonic cameras as the A-camera. They are solid, highly ergonomic, have a reliable picture and good sound with a mature post-workflow.
To add a DSLR such as a Canon 5D, 7D or even T2i for your b-camera/b-roll can greatly expand the creative possibilities with shallow depth of field and interchangeable lenses and it’s relatively affordable next to the investment in the other prosumer camcorders you mentioned.

I’m using FCP for my NLE…Hadn’t thought of a DSLR yet… Good idea!!

For short web content the Canon 5D or 7D work great and give a great cinema look. They aren’t the best for broadcast, but that’s not your market. You will have to invest in a good independent sound recorder though as sound is not a DSLR’s strong suit. I recommend a Tascam DR-100 and a Sennheiser ME66 Shotgun. My favorite lens is the Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di-II VC LD Aspherical (IF) Lens that runs about $650.
