Best Audio Export Settings and Workflow to send for Surround Mix
Hello! I’m currently finishing up a pretty big project in Premiere that I plan to deliver in 5.1 surround sound. (I am not an audio engineer, but I know the basics and I’m a fast learner. Obviously, this is an indie with a minimal budget. Excuse me if I misuse some verbiage)
The project currently includes 30 tracks of audio (dialogue, ambiance, sound effects, music, etc.) that I mixed myself, with some basic effects applied. Everything currently sounds great when I export the project in stereo. I’ve kept my tracks pretty organized, with the first 15 designated to the dialogue (separated by character), a track of just ambiance, a bunch for SFX, and the last 2 for JUST the music/score.
Right now, my plan of attack is to export each track by type or “group” (for example, export all dialogue together, then all sound effects, then all music) to then bring into a separate sequence for 5.1 and mix the final there.
Now that you know my situation, my questions are as follows…
1.) Is this a smart workflow? Would anyone recommend a better route? As of now, I’ve only been working in Premiere. I also know my way around Logic and I’ve used for mixdowns for smaller projects in the past.
2.) In this case, what would be the best export settings from my original project to later bring into my 5.1 sequence? It looks like the highest-quality for export is AAC, 160kbps, 48 khz. And should I export these “groups” of tracks in mono or stereo, if I’m mixing later in 5.1?
That’s about all I’ve got for now. I really appreciate any feedback or tips. I’ve been able to find a lot of helpful forums in this community, but I couldn’t find one specific to this. Thank you!

To clarify, the sequence I’m currently working in is stereo.
