BEST ASPECT RATIO FOR 16X9
I’m doing a piece that will have only still images that will play on a 16×9 tv monitor.
They don’t have the tvs yet, so I won’t know any more about them until after the piece
is made. Is HDV/HDTV 720 the best preset to use? Will square pixels work the best, since there’s no video in this piece? If I do use video, what should I change the pixel aspect ratio to? I’m a bit confused about these larger presets and how/when to use them. Any light shed on the matter would be greatly appreciated.thanks!!

Generally, in almost every case you will have a preset in the Composition Settings dialog for the device you are producing the segment for.
However, a 16×9 aspect ratio is insufficient to determine which preset to use.
It sounds like you think you’re producing for an HD display. If that is the case then you will want to use the preset that matches the HD display’s resolution and frame rate (make sure you use one with HDTV in the title, not HDV or DVCPROHD alone, these have the ‘wrong’ pixel aspect ratios).
If you are producing for SD then you need to choose either the NTSC DV Widescreen or PAL D1/DV Widescreen presets.
If you use these presets then you should not have to worry about the pixel aspect ratio of the composition at all (only your imported footage).

The monitor aspect ratio is only half the story. The other half is:
How is the video being played back?
If it is being played back on a standard def DVD player, then you need to use the DV widescreen preset. (to view your comp “normally” while working, use Pixel Aspect Ratio correction in the comp window)
So: how is the video being played back? DVD? Hard Drive?
