    hi guys!

new to this forum – quite new to after effects…

long story short: i was wondering if it is possible at all to BEND layers in 3d space – and if so, how?

it’s trapcodes 3d-stroke plug-in that started that train of thought…

    many thanx in advance guys!

    Not as such…
As it currently stands AE does not have a NURBS-like feature that allows you to warp or bend a layer in 3d space. There may be a plugin that does this as a 2d simulation of 3d space, but as far as I’ve seen, actual arcs in the AE 3d world don’t exist. It’s all about tricking the eye to believe it’s seen a 3D sphere, Arc, bend, etc.. in 2d.
You can assort separate layers in an “arc” (made up of different flat planes on the radius of a shared center point) in AE 3d space, as described a bit in the “ring of Cows” tutorial on this website. This may work for your purposes if you play with it; but really, if you want video on a true 3D arc, curve, etc., then use a 3D program like Cinema4D and skin your object with your chosen video layer.

    thanx guys!

so – plug-ins like 3d invigorator only fake 3d – i understand. i guess i was just confused when i saw parts of the glass globe tutorial – as the globes texture was seemingly going “around” the globe…
i guess zaxwerks new 3d layer warp is not interacting with ae’s 3d either?

not that i understand programing software – but it seems to me that ae would have to be rewritten to become a true 3d engine?

but then again – when i see stuff like trapcodes particle plug-in, i realize “true” 3d IS possible in ae. i guess i’m at a loss…

No, Zaxwerks *IS* true 3D, but it works outside of AE..it just uses AE’s camera for integration. I presume the 3D warps plugin is true 3D aswell. AE itself though is only capable of manipluating 2D layers in 3D space (sometimes described as ‘2.5d’). 3D stroke and particular are 3D plugins, but they work within AE’s limited 2.5d environment.

Something like a Flame/Smoke or I think even Eyeon Fusion can bend and create 3D shapes from within the app. They all have a TRUE 3D compositing evironment. But you pay for the privilege! You can pick up Fusion for about

looks like motion may be joining that 2nd group.

Word has it that that could be enabled by third parties…

What like a Zaxwerks type plugin for Motion?…Or Motion being a full 3D compositing environ? Blimey. Are they bumping up the price tag aswell then?

Not heard a peep about Motion tbh, but to be fair I’ve not really been looking.

motion3 will have a 2.5/3d environment like the current one in AFX, but there were some WHISPERS that a 3rd party MIGHT be able to add in model import…
