  • Bend or curve object into circular (cylindrical) shape possible?

Posted by Tangier Clarke on June 12, 2014 at 4:26 pm

Folks, I am trying to figure out how one would bend an object (if it’s even possible) in Motion 5. It seems possible with text, but not an object.

Take something like a simple rectangle shape (or logo whose bounding box is rectangular). I’d like to curve it so that the left and right sides touch so that it’d be a cylindrical shape. I am trying to achieve something like a spinning ticker tape using a logo that’s been converted into a replicator.

Hope this makes sense. If I can’t do this in Motion, I guess I’ll have to figure it out in Blender.

    Thanks folks.

Nope. Not possible. You need true 3D capabilities. Motion is for animating 2D objects in 3D space. I think there are plugins that can do what you want but they cost money. If you know blender, then you’re probably better off using it to create a cylinder and then using your logo as a mesh to wrap it with.

That exactly what I am look for. I wish this capability was built into Motion. Here I am doing it in Blender before you sent this.

If you had to call it, do you think Apple would build the features from mObject into Motion 6?

Nope. Don’t see it happening. Good thing, too. Not even AE has it. For a good reason. Adobe left that part up to a third party also (C4D).
