    Who are “they” and can you show us what they have done?

    There are lots of different ways to make text bend in either 2 or 3 dimensions. The technique you use will depend on the results you’re after.

    Posting an example (still or video) will help.
    You are probably referring to a 3d distortion.
    This can be achieved with Free Form.

    This looks like a straight 3D AE animation.
    Here’s a recipe:
    Break down the text plate in as many layers as you need for the folding. Set anchor points on the fold line. Parent in the right order (outer pieces are parented to those close to the center and those to the center piece. Animate in reverse. Once the piece is unfolded cut to full title plate to avoid seeing lines in between the various parts. Use Motion Blur… i usually take that with coffee.
