If you want to deform in three dimensions, the Forge Freeform plugin used to be the only way within AE, but Forge seems to be asleep these days. I don’t know if the plug has been updated lately. Maybe you could check out 3D layer .

AE actually wasn’t designed to deform in three dimensions. Most 3D apps can do that pretty easily.

I like Digital Anarchy’s Path Distort for 2d bending. It’s not the speediest effect, but still very useful.
