Hello again everyone. I have another hardware question to ask. Does anyone use a Bella(or other brand) keyboard that is Premiere specific for editing? I’ve seen them on the web and they look attractive, so I’m curious if anyone uses it. If so, do the shortcuts improve workflow? Do all the keys work correctly, etc? I do realize that updates and drivers are important. I like that jog shuttle! 🙂

    Thanx,
    Eric

I have been an NLE editor for over 10 years now and have always used shortcut keys. I have made it the highest priority to learn them as it makes for massive increases in editing speed and efficiency.

I find using the keyboard shortcut keys – with a proper knowledge of them – allows me to shuttle and jog fine without the need for a wheel. Holding the K key while tapping the J key will jog 1 frame at a time in reverse, while holding K while tapping L will jog 1 frame in forward. Holding down K and J or L will shuttle slowly. Releasing K will shuttle at 1x speed in the direction last used (J back L forward) re-tapping J or L speeds up the shuttle direction, tapping it to the other (from J to L or vice versa) will pull down the speed of the shuttle direction until it hits 1x speed then continuing to tap will continue the shuttle speed increase in that direction, J or L. It’s very fast responding and just as efficient (more so for me) as a wheel. Technically the wheel is bound by the same shortcuts all rolled into the wheel.

Shuttle Jog wheels always felt way too… Pre-2000 for me.

    That’s my 2c.

I think it’s more important to internalize keyboard shortcuts rather than relying on a colored keyboard, which really only has a portion of the shortcuts you’ll need day in and day out. Many shortcuts are enabled with a modifier key and those don’t show up on a keyboard like that.

Learn a few shortcuts every day and in a few months, you’ll know enough to speed up your workflow.

I do recommend buying one if you think it may impress clients. That’s the only reason I did it!
