    Hi All,

I started learning modelling in C4D. I am following an excellent tutorial produced by the great Toby Pitman and Motionworks.

I got stuck at one point however. In the tutorial video Toby shows a method to sharpen edges via the so called “borrowed edges” method.

He creates two cuts along the edge he desires to sharpen then dissolves the edge in between the two cuts.

I have included images here Steps 1-4:

    Step 5:

When I try to use the same method and dissolve the edge in the middle I end up with a “chopped off” or “rounded” edge shown here:

Could some please explain why I am not getting the desired results?

    Many thanks,

    Lucas

Update: I figured out that if I delete the undesired edge in point mode the sides will not collapse. I don’t understand however why it behaves this way and that why can I not dissolve the edge in “edge” mode like Toby does it in the tutorial.

In the tutorial images his Plane is in a Subdivision Surface object and your Polygon object is not, so the cut off corner is exactly what I would expect, it takes the SubD to smooth it out as in the tutorial.

    Hi Brian,

Thank you for your response. Whilst the object in the tutorial is certainly is in a Subdivision Surface the Surface is certainly not causing the mesh to collapse on the edge when applying the controlled cuts and trying to dissolve the middle line in “Edge” mode to create the diamond shaped quad.

Take a look at the picture below to see that the geometry, and mesh remains intact and supported by the borrowed edges when the unwanted edge dissolved in point mode.

    Before dissolving the point:

    After dissolving the corner point:

What I wish to understand is why I do not get the same result when dissolving the middle edge in “edge” mode just like the tutor does it in the modelling tutorial. (See images above.)

I am still hoping that someone will be able to provide an answer here.

    Kind regards,

    Lucas
