  • Beam effect with middle thickness control?

Posted by Brian Covalt on February 7, 2009 at 7:13 am

I’d like to use the Beam effect in AE, but as it is, there is only a Starting Thickness and Ending Thickness.
What I want is a beam that is thin at the beginning and end, but thick in the middle.

Is there a way to get this, or another filter?
I’ve already tried doing it with 2 separate beams side by side – and it kind of works, but not that well, because they don’t composite on top of one another that well. You can tell that one beam is over another because of the white center over the outer glow of the other.

    Thanks for any suggestions!

[Brian Covalt] “You can tell that one beam is over another because of the white center over the outer glow of the other.”

I think you have a couple of options here. One would be to make both beams use the same color for their core and their outer glow, then pre-comp and add the outer glow by some other means (like the Glow effect).

Another option, that would only really work if there is no footage behind the beam, is to set the top beam to the ‘Lighten’ blend mode which should make the darker outer glow of the upper layer disappear where the lower layer is brighter.
