BDA is turning around
Steve Kazamjian has only been chair for a year, and he’s already done an
incredible amount of work. I think that this year’s conference will be
a dramatic improvement over last year’s.
Here is part of a note that he sent:– We’ve launched http://www.dzine.tv. After designinmotion stopped servicing the industry on a normal basis, BDA took over. The sight gets an average of 9,000 hits a month and posts at least 10 new stories every Friday.
– We’ve affiliated ourselves to give members sizable discounts to Stash DVD. This is being instituted in 2006 as well.
– We’ve initiated student scholarships to the conference ($50 conference costs for them) and are now reaching out to Design schools to create internship programs with Broadcasters, Cable Nets, and Design Studios.
– We’ve written up a “Best Practices” initiate for the design community and are getting buy-in from the top cable networks. This covers everything from pitch practices and ethics to ownership of material. You should start seeing this initiative gain momentum over the first quarter of 2006.
– We’ve held local events in Los Angeles and New York for the design community. These initiates are being expanded over 2006 to include LA, New York, Miami, Atlanta, and Chicago. The next New York event is slated for January 18th.
– Kyle Cooper is slated to speak at the 2006 conference.
– At the 2006 conference, BDA will be once again having it’s own awards show.
– We’ve redesigned http://www.bda.tv.
– We’ve reached out to Justin Cone at Tween and have pledged our support in any way we can.
– We’re in talks about holding small local conferences (at discounted rates) in key cities to offset those who can’t afford the June conference.
– We’ve added relevant Board members to the BDA Board of Governors (specifically New York design studios). Otis College of Art and Design, Freestyle Collective, Fuel, Attik, Beehive, Showtime Networks.)
